Four in Five Marketing Blogs Ship Article Schema. Fewer Than Half Name a Person.

Key Takeaways

  • 35 of 44 marketing publications (80%) emit Article-type JSON-LD on their latest post; 9 emit none.
  • Only 19 (43%) mark the author as a schema.org Person; vendors do it more often (52%) than independent publications (27%).
  • 27 (61%) include dateModified; 17 do not, which leaves freshness unstated to any machine reader.
  • FAQPage appears on 4 of 44 (9%); BreadcrumbList on 25 (57%); Organization on 19 (43%).
  • The nine with no Article schema on their newest post: Content Marketing Institute, Animalz, Chief Martec, Buffer, Customer.io, PostHog, Jasper, Clearscope and Clay.

Four in Five Marketing Blogs Ship Article Schema. Fewer Than Half Name a Person.

Structured data is the layer answer engines read first. We wanted to know how much of it marketing publishers actually emit on the thing they publish most: the newest post on the blog.

How many marketing blogs emit Article schema on their latest post?

We fixed a corpus of 55 marketing publications, 20 independent (Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land, MarTech.org, Marketing Brew, Content Marketing Institute, Backlinko, Neil Patel, Moz, Adweek and others) and 35 vendor blogs drawn from the same 54-vendor corpus our other research audits use. For each, we found the RSS feed (or, for the 25 publications with no feed, rendered the blog index), took the most recent article, and parsed every JSON-LD block on it. Forty-four resolved to a real article; the rest blocked our fetch or resolved only to a hub page and are excluded.

Structured data on the latest article All 44 Independent 15 Vendor 29
Article, BlogPosting or NewsArticle 35 (80%) 12 (80%) 23 (79%)
Author is a Person object 19 (43%) 4 (27%) 15 (52%)
dateModified present 27 (61%) 9 (60%) 18 (62%)
BreadcrumbList 25 (57%) 11 (73%) 14 (48%)
Organization 19 (43%) 10 (67%) 9 (31%)
FAQPage 4 (9%) 1 (7%) 3 (10%)

The headline number is fine. Four in five is real adoption. The rows underneath are where the gap lives.

Why does the Person author field matter, and who skips it?

An Article schema with an author string is a byline. An Article schema with an author that is a Person object, ideally with a URL and sameAs links, is an entity a machine can resolve, connect to other work, and weigh. It is the structured-data half of what search engines call E-E-A-T, and it is the field most directly tied to whether an answer engine treats a piece as written by someone identifiable.

Fewer than half of the corpus does it. The surprise is the direction of the split: 15 of 29 vendor blogs (52%) mark a Person, against 4 of 15 independent publications (27%). Search Engine Land, MarTech.org, Search Engine Journal, Neil Patel and Ahrefs all had a visible human byline on the article we fetched and no Person object behind it. HubSpot, Semrush, Backlinko, Klaviyo, Mixpanel, Copy.ai, lemlist, Instantly, Cognism, Amplitude, Surfer, Livestorm, Smartlead and Writesonic all did.

If you run an independent publication and assumed the vendors were behind you on this, the newest posts say otherwise. Our companion byline audit looks at the human-visible half of the same question.

How many carry a dateModified?

Twenty-seven of 44. The other seventeen tell a machine when the article was published, or nothing, and leave "when was this last true" unanswered. For a category whose posts routinely carry "2026" in the title, that is a strange thing to omit; our undated-web audit found the problem is worse than this on year-labelled articles specifically, where a third carry no machine-readable date of any kind.

dateModified is also the field a freshness-sensitive retrieval system leans on. A page with a 2024 datePublished and no dateModified reads as 2024, however many times it has been updated since.

Who ships FAQPage, and does it still matter?

Four of 44: one independent (B2B Marketing) and three vendors. FAQPage lost most of its rich-result value in Google in 2023, when Google restricted the FAQ rich result to authoritative government and health sites, so low adoption is rational if the only goal was a SERP feature.

It is less rational now that answer engines extract question-and-answer pairs directly. A FAQ block marked as FAQPage is the most legible possible signal that a page contains discrete, quotable answers, which is exactly what our guide to structuring content so AI engines quote it recommends. Ninety-one percent of the corpus is not sending that signal on its newest post.

Which publications ship no Article schema at all?

Nine: Content Marketing Institute, Animalz, Chief Martec, Buffer, Customer.io, PostHog, Jasper, Clearscope and Clay. Some of these are recent Webflow or custom builds where structured data was never wired; some are older platforms. Buffer's latest post carried a visible author and a date and no JSON-LD to describe either. PostHog's is a well-formatted markdown page with no schema block. Clay's is one of the more read GTM blogs in the category and emits none.

None of this makes the writing worse. It makes it less legible to the systems that increasingly decide what gets quoted, and it is a five-line fix in most templates.

What are the limits of this audit?

One article per publication, the newest at crawl time on 2026-08-16, so a template change since would move a row. Eleven of 55 publications did not resolve to an article (three blocked our fetch, three exposed no article link from the index, five resolved to a hub page) and are excluded rather than guessed at. Where an article page was client-rendered we parsed the rendered DOM, so schema injected by JavaScript is counted. The full per-publication table, with the article URL and every JSON-LD type found, is in the data file published alongside this piece.

FAQ

How many marketing blogs use Article schema?

35 of the 44 publications in this audit (80%) emit Article, BlogPosting or NewsArticle JSON-LD on their most recent post.

Do marketing publishers mark up authors as Person entities?

Fewer than half: 19 of 44 (43%). Vendor blogs do so more often (15 of 29) than independent publications (4 of 15).

How common is FAQPage schema on marketing content?

Rare: 4 of 44 latest articles (9%) carried FAQPage. Google restricted the FAQ rich result in 2023, but the markup remains a clear extractability signal for answer engines.

Which marketing publications have no Article schema?

On the article we fetched: Content Marketing Institute, Animalz, Chief Martec, Buffer, Customer.io, PostHog, Jasper, Clearscope and Clay.

Why does dateModified matter for structured data?

It is the field that tells a machine when a page was last updated. 17 of 44 publications omit it, so their refreshed articles read as their original publish date to any freshness-sensitive system.
