The Self-Citing Listicle: 76% of Vendor "Best Tools" Posts Include the Vendor, 29% Rank It #1
By Priya Raman, AI SEO, GEO & Martech Analytics. Last updated: 2026-08-16
"Best tools" listicles are the highest-intent content in the martech stack, and most of them are written by the tools. We wanted to know how the writer treats itself.
How often do vendors put themselves in their own best-tools lists?
We took the same 54-vendor corpus our other research audits use, harvested each vendor's sitemap, and pulled up to three URLs matching the "best" or "top" plus "tools / software / platforms / apps" pattern. Forty vendors had at least one; 105 pages in total, all fetched. Seven were French, German or Spanish localisations, and because our disclosure detection is English-only we set those aside rather than score them as undisclosed, leaving 98 pages from 38 vendors. For each we extracted the h2 and h3 headings, preferring numbered ones, treated those as the list, and checked whether the vendor's own name appears as an item and at what position. Then we searched the page text for disclosure phrases.
| Measure | Pages | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor mentions itself somewhere on the page | 98 | 100% |
| Vendor appears as a list item | 74 | 76% |
| Vendor is list item number one | 28 | 29% |
| Any disclosure language on the page | 21 | 21% |
| Vendor ranked first with no disclosure | 22 | 22% |
Three quarters list themselves. Nearly a third lead with themselves. One in five says anything about it.
Who ranks themselves first without saying so?
The clearest cases are vendors that did it repeatedly. Surfer ranked itself number one in two of its three posts, including "13 Best AI SEO Tools in 2026" and "9 Best AI Visibility Tools for Search," with no disclosure language on either. Outreach, HockeyStack, Buffer, 11x and Livestorm each ranked themselves first in two of three posts, none with disclosure. Klaviyo, Instantly, Apollo, Copy.ai, Writesonic, Anyword, Taplio, Demio, Artisan and Vidyard each did it once. Semrush ranked itself first in all three of its sampled posts too, but all three were French and German localisations that our English-only disclosure check cannot score, so Semrush is recorded as self-first and unassessed on disclosure.
Outreach's "11 best AI sales pipeline tools to scale revenue in 2026" opens its list with Outreach. Clay's "Best B2B Email List Providers, Tested & Ranked (2026)" opens with Clay, though Clay does carry disclosure language on that page. Klaviyo's "Best CRM software for 2026" ranks Klaviyo first in a CRM list.
None of this is hidden and none of it is illegal. It is a vendor's blog. But these pages are titled as if they were reviews, and a reader who arrives from a search for "best AI SEO tools" is not necessarily reading the URL bar.

Start Free →Who discloses, and how?
Twenty-one pages, and the pattern is instructive. PostHog listed itself first in all three of its posts and disclosed it in all three; its "best error tracking tools" post is typical of a house style that says, in effect, we make one of these and here is why we still think the comparison is useful. Clay disclosed on both posts where it listed itself. AiSDR and Salesforce disclosed on three of three, Customer.io on two of two, Artisan on two of three, and Copper, Instantly, Close, Smartlead, Seamless.ai and Qualified once each.
The disclosure text varies from a formal "Disclosure:" line to "we're obviously biased" to "yes, we make one of these." Any of them does the job. The job is telling the reader, in the reader's language, that the author has a stake, and 77 of 98 pages do not do it.
Why does this matter more now than it used to?
Because the reader is increasingly not a person. Answer engines that field "what is the best AI SEO tool" retrieve exactly these pages, extract the ranked list, and synthesise. A list whose author ranks itself first, undisclosed, gets processed the same as a list from a neutral reviewer. Whether the model discounts vendor-authored lists is not something any of them publishes. Our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT covers what those systems demonstrably do read. Disclosure language is the one thing on the page that a model can read as a bias signal, and four fifths of these pages omit it.
There is also a plainer commercial point. A vendor that publishes "the 12 best [category] tools" and ranks itself first is spending its own domain authority to rank for a query where the click either goes to it or to a competitor it just introduced. The vendors that disclose have decided the credibility is worth more than the ambiguity. On the evidence of which pages get cited in our statistics-roundup audit, that is probably right.
What are the limits of this audit?
Up to three posts per vendor, chosen by URL pattern from sitemaps on 2026-08-16, so 98 pages is a sample of vendor listicles, not a census. Seven non-English pages were excluded from all counts because the disclosure check is English-only. List structure was read from h2 and h3 headings; a list rendered as bold paragraphs or a table is missed, which makes self-listing and first-position counts floors. Disclosure detection is a phrase match; a vendor that discloses in unusual words could be undercounted, and one whose page contains "we built" in an unrelated sentence could be overcounted. Every page URL, its title, the detected position and the disclosure flag are in the data file published alongside this piece.

How often do vendors include themselves in their own best-tools posts?
In this audit of 98 English posts from 38 martech vendors, 74 (76%) list the publishing vendor as one of the tools, and 28 (29%) rank it first.
Which vendors rank themselves first without disclosure?
Outreach, Surfer, HockeyStack, Buffer, 11x and Livestorm each ranked themselves first in two of three posts with no disclosure language detected; ten more vendors did so once.
Which vendors disclose that they are in their own list?
21 of 98 posts carry disclosure language. PostHog disclosed on all three of its posts, as did AiSDR and Salesforce; Clay, Artisan and Customer.io on two each.
Do vendor best-tools lists always mention the vendor?
Yes: all 98 pages mention the publishing vendor somewhere on the page, even the 24 that do not list it as a ranked item.
Why does disclosure in a listicle matter for AI search?
Answer engines retrieve and summarise these pages when asked "what is the best X." A disclosure phrase is the one on-page signal that flags authorial stake; without it, a self-ranked list reads like a neutral review to a machine.
