Every LinkedIn automation vendor has a story about why its approach is the sound one: cloud is safer than an extension, an extension is safer than a bot, an API is safer than everything. We wanted to see the stories side by side, in the vendors' own words.

How do LinkedIn automation tools describe the way they work?

We took 30 named tools, rendered each homepage and pricing page in headless Chromium, and dropped six that were dead, discontinued or had pivoted out of the category (the market map records each). Across the 24 live tools we searched the rendered text for every description of mechanism and read each match by hand.

Categories overlap because vendors describe themselves in more than one way. PhantomBuster and La Growth Machine each describe both a cloud service and an extension. SalesRobot describes cloud, API, dedicated IP and human-like behaviour all at once.

What is the difference between cloud, extension and desktop tools?

The distinction vendors draw is about where the automation runs and what LinkedIn can see.

A browser extension runs inside the user's own browser session, injecting code into LinkedIn's pages. It is the oldest model, the easiest to build, and the one LinkedIn can detect most directly, because the modified page is right there. Dripify, lemlist, Reply.io and LeadConnect describe this model.

A cloud-based tool runs on the vendor's servers, logging into the account from a machine the vendor controls, which is why several pair it with a dedicated or country-matched IP so the login does not look like it is coming from a data centre in another continent. Expandi, MeetAlfred, Salesflow, Skylead, Botdog and LinkedFusion describe this model. It removes the extension from the user's browser and moves the exposure to the vendor's infrastructure.

A desktop app runs on the user's own machine without touching the LinkedIn page's code. Linked Helper makes this its whole pitch: "Desktop app, not a Chrome extension. No code injected into the LinkedIn page." TexAu also describes a desktop application.

The two API claims sit apart from all three, because they assert a permission the others do not.

Which tools claim API access, and what do the claims mean?

Two of 24. Reachium's homepage FAQ says it "uses LinkedIn's verified API, not a Chrome extension or scraper," and its footer says the platform is "built on the verified API." SalesRobot's homepage says it "uses LinkedIn mobile app APIs on the backend which reduces LinkedIn Account ban risk to 0."

These are different claims. "Mobile app APIs" describes the private endpoints LinkedIn's own mobile app talks to, which some tools reverse-engineer; that is a technical description of a scraping surface, not a permission. "Official" or "verified" API describes sanctioned access. LinkedIn's public developer platform offers Marketing, Sales Navigator and Sign-In APIs to approved partners, none of which is documented as permitting connection-request automation from a member's personal account, and LinkedIn does not publish a list of approved outreach vendors.

What does LinkedIn permit?

LinkedIn's help article on prohibited software says it "doesn't permit the use of any third party software, including crawlers, bots, browser plug-ins, or browser extensions that scrape, modify the appearance of, or automate activity on LinkedIn's website," and warns that members using such tools "risk having their accounts restricted or shut down." A companion article on automated activity tells restricted members to disable the software before the account is re-enabled.

That sentence does not distinguish cloud from extension from desktop. Every mechanism in the table above is a way of automating activity on LinkedIn, and LinkedIn's stated position is that it permits none of them. The mechanism debate the vendors are having is therefore about detectability and consequences, not about permission. Why do five tools say nothing about their mechanism?

Octopus CRM, Zeekeo (formerly Zopto), HeyReach, We-Connect and Andsend (formerly Zaplify) describe features, pricing and outcomes without describing how the automation runs. Some are known in the market to be cloud tools; that is not the point. The point is that a buyer reading their public pages cannot tell, and mechanism is the single most consequential fact about a LinkedIn tool's risk profile.

Compare that with the safety claims the same corpus makes: seven tools call themselves the safest, and several of the loudest safety claims come from tools that do explain their mechanism, which at least gives a buyer something to evaluate. Silence on mechanism combined with a safety superlative would be the worst combination, and Octopus CRM manages both.

What are the limits of this audit?

Homepages and pricing pages only, rendered on 2026-08-16. Help centers, docs and blogs, where a vendor may describe its architecture in more detail, were not crawled. Every mechanism is recorded as the vendor's own description; nothing here establishes how any tool actually works. Overlapping categories are recorded as overlapping rather than forced into one bucket. The corpus is 30 recognisable LinkedIn outreach tools, not the whole market.
